Throughout the 2024 NFL season, the Washington Commanders have been quite the surprise team. One year after going 4-13, a clean house within the club has helped the squad go 6-2 through their first eight games.
The addition of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and first-year Washington head coach Dan Quinn has greatly benefited the team. Terry McLaurin, a star wide receiver, has seen firsthand what it’s like to have the LSU product under centre and finally have a franchise quarterback deliver him the ball.
Could the Commanders be looking to add more wide receiver aid to the offence at the trade deadline? This season, receivers Amari Cooper, Davante Adams, DeAndre Hopkins, and Diontae Johnson have all been traded.
Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports advocated a deal for a handful of contenders, including the Commanders, ahead of the deadline. In the simulated trade, Washington strikes a deal to acquire Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.
“The Commanders secondary could undoubtedly benefit from a trade to make the pass defence more fearsome. However, they may also use a pass catcher to help build around rookie phenom Jayden Daniels,” Sullivan said. “And if the Cincinnati Bengals slip farther below.500 between now and the deadline, what bigger swing could GM Adam Peters make than trading for wide receiver Tee Higgins? The Bengals did not pay Higgins this offseason, and he is ready to become a free agency. If they are out of the postseason race and do not intend to re-sign Higgins, it would be prudent to acquire a blue-chip asset in exchange for him while they still have the opportunity.”
The Bengals would be wise to release the receiver before he enters free agency. The Commanders can take advantage of this by trading for him at a discount, allowing them to see what they can do in the first year with Daniels at the helm.
A trade for a receiver would not only make the offense’s life easier, but it would also demonstrate the club’s faith in their franchise quarterback.
