Week 9 is likely the most important game of the season so far for the Green Bay Packers. It’s a divisional game against the Detroit Lions, and Green Bay could be without their starting quarterback, Jordan Love, depending on how his injury progresses in the coming hours.
The Packers should be confident at 6-2, despite Love’s slight setback. Even if he misses a game, Green Bay remains in good shape.
Fans who believed this club had everything it needed to succeed this season were correct. There are a few positions that may be upgraded before making a deep run, but the NFL trade deadline is just a few days away.
The deadline is Tuesday of next week. Currently, the Packers could improve in two areas: the secondary and the pass rush. If Brian Gutekunst wants to take things seriously and quickly, he should try one of these last-minute moves to have an immediate influence on this team.
The Packers should make a major impact at the NFL trade deadline to ensure NFC North supremacy.
Trade 1: Packers acquire pass-rusher Azeez Ojulari.
With Kayvon Thibodeaux out due to injury, Azeez Ojulari has really stepped up for the New York Giants in recent weeks. This season is also a contract year for the fourth-year player, which explains why the young pass rusher needs to perform better than ever.
The 24-year-old has 5.0 sacks in his previous three games and 6.0 overall this season as a rotational pass rusher, playing 55 percent of snaps. New York may be prepared to part with him because he is not currently part of their long-term plans.
More Packers
Packers have an obvious advantage over Nobody talks about Jared Goff.
The Packers need help up front, as no player has more than 3.0 sacks this season. If Ojulari joins the Packers and records 6.0 or more sacks down the stretch, this fifth-round pick will be converted into a fourth-rounder. That appears to be a fair offer, and the Packers may even reach an agreement with Ojulari for a long-term contract.
Trade 2: Packers capitalize on the Browns’ misery and acquire CB Greg Newsome
The Packers also urgently need help in the secondary. Aside from Jaire Alexander, this defence hasn’t produced many standout cornerbacks. Despite their recent triumph over Baltimore, the Cleveland Browns may be staging a fire sale. While Myles Garrett is unlikely to be traded, former first-round pick Greg Newsome may be available.
Newsome is versatile and can play both inside and outside, which is a significant plus for the Packers defence. In the spirit of recent conditional selection deals, here’s another: if Newsome has two or more interceptions and the Packers make the playoffs, this pick becomes a third-round pick.
That may seem like a high price, but the Packers also have him next year since his fifth-year option was picked up. If he and Alexander can provide the one-two punch that this defence has long need, it will be money well spent.
Trade 3: Packers go all-in and make noise by acquiring CB Marshon Lattimore.
Finally, the Packers might go all in on a trade for veteran cornerback and former All-Pro Marshon Lattimore of the New Orleans Saints. The four-time Pro Bowl corner is a contract that the Saints will most certainly want to get rid of; otherwise, they can cut him next summer and save around $11 million.
New Orleans has been known to be in cap hell in recent years, repeatedly pushing money down the road, and it will eventually catch up with them. Lattimore could be on his way out, and he’s been mentioned in trade rumours previously.
This season, he’s had a fantastic season, and few people are talking about it because of the Saints’ present troubles. Giving this secondary a cornerback who has yet to allow a score and has an opposing QB rating of 69.1? Sign us up.
