Jayden Daniels, the Washington Commanders’ quarterback, has created a name for himself in his rookie NFL season. With a 6-2 record, the former No. 2 overall choice has already helped the squad surpass last season’s win total of four. On Thursday, the NFL named him the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week for his efforts against the Chicago Bears in Week 8.
He battled against Caleb Williams, the Bears’ former No. 1 overall choice and quarterback. In addition to tossing a 52-yard, game-winning Hail Mary to earn an 18-15 victory, Daniels’ stat line stood out once more. He completed 21 of 38 attempts for 326 yards and one throwing touchdown. On the ground, he ran eight times for 52 yards.
The Commanders’ social media team had fun revealing that their young star quarterback had won the honour for the sixth time this season. They announced that the prize would have a new name going forward.
In just eight games, Daniels has 1,736 throwing yards, seven passing touchdowns, and only two interceptions. On top of that, he has 424 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback began his college football career at Arizona State, where he played three years before moving to LSU for the final two.
In his final season, he earned the Heisman Trophy, which is given annually to the finest college football player in the country. Daniels and the Commanders will take on the Giants in Week 9 in New York. Sunday’s game begins at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
