The Detroit Lions are now playing like the top team in the NFL. Detroit is 6-1 into a big Week 9 game against the Packers. However, it is no secret that the Lions are trying to add edge rushers. It is a Super Bowl contender’s worst weakness, and the NFL media hasn’t been bashful about speculating on who they should sign. On Friday, a former NFL general manager made an especially insane trade proposal.
On Friday’s Get Up, former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum proposed a wild deal between the Lions and Browns.
This proposed trade would send Myles Garrett, a Browns defensive end, to the Lions in exchange for a large package. The package includes:
Three first-round picks (2024–2026)
One second-round pick.
RB Jahmyr Gibbs
Simply put, this is a foolish trade idea. First and foremost, the Lions have consistently stated that they would not be desperate in their search for a successor for Aidan Hutchinson. This trade package exemplifies the concept of being desperate.
It also does not give the Lions with adequate value in return. Myles Garrett is an exceptional edge rusher, but he will turn 29 before the playoffs. It is reasonable to wonder how many years of peak play he still has left in him. That is a critical issue to examine when giving up several first-round picks and a rising superstar like Jahmyr Gibbs.
The Browns would love this trade package, but it makes little sense for the Lions.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff returns to practice on Thursday ahead of the critical Packers showdown.
One major storyline into Week 9’s Lions vs. Packers showdown is the health of both teams’ starting quarterbacks. Both Jared Goff and Jordan Love were injured in Week 8.
Love strained his groin early in the game and left for good. He did not practice on Wednesday, but returned to the Packers’ practice on Thursday.
Goff seemed to roll his ankle in the first quarter against the Titans. He stayed in the game, but it didn’t matter much on a day dominated by Detroit’s defence and special teams. Goff, like Love, missed Wednesday’s practice but returned to Lions practice on Thursday.
Unless something unforeseen happens on Friday, Jared Goff appears to be healthy and will play in Week 9 as usual. However, Jordan Love is not a sure thing. If Packers coach Matt LaFleur is not confidence in Love’s ability to defend himself on the field, he will replace him with Malik Willis.
As long as Jared Goff is active, Lions supporters have nothing to be concerned about in Week 9. Goff has been on a roll over the last four games and will seek to maintain that in a crucial divisional battle on Sunday.
