The Denver Broncos faced a measuring stick battle against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. After Sean Payton and his team had beaten up on a few inferior teams, it was time to assess how strong their postseason case was.
As it turns out, the Broncos aren’t ready to compete with the AFC’s elite teams. The Ravens dominated them from start to end on Sunday, breaking the game wide in the second quarter and coasting to a 41-10 victory to improve to 6-3 and get their season back on track after a shocking setback to the Cleveland Browns last week.
The Broncos’ league-best defence suffered a humiliating defeat. Aside from quarterback Bo Nix’s fourth-down touchdown catch, the offence struggled to find success. According to Zach Stevens of DNVR Sports, Nix was candid after the game about what went wrong for his team.
“There were a lot of what-ifs in this game, but the truth is we got our butts kicked,” Nix said afterward, according to Stevens.
Nix later stated that he is disappointed that the Broncos returned to losing ways on Sunday, especially in such a fashion.
“This is miserable,” Nix replied, according to Stevens. “It’s no fun.”
Nix’s ultimate stat line is unspectacular, but not terrible: 19-for-33, 223 yards, an interception, and a receiving score. He also rushed for 36 yards on six attempts. While he was still unpredictable in the pocket and had questionable downfield accuracy, Nix’s athleticism remains a valuable asset to the Broncos offence. His legs add a new dimension to Denver, and his scrambling helped the Broncos pick up a couple crucial first downs in the first half.
The Broncos will have another difficult challenge when they face the Kansas City Chiefs, who currently boast one of the greatest defences in the NFL. If Nix and his team want to get back in the win column, they have a lot of work to do before next Sunday.
