The New York Yankees might be willing to pay a premium for a top reliever this offseason.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi claimed on Friday that the Yankees are interested in free agency reliever Carlos Estevez as the offseason begins. However, Morosi notes that the Yankees are also interested in “many” other relievers.
Estevez, 31, is a talented right-hander who was an All-Star for the Los Angeles Angels in 2023 and had a 2.45 ERA last season between the Angels and the Philadelphia Phillies. However, he is more of a fly ball pitcher, does not have outstanding swing-and-miss ability, and has blown 19 saves over the last four seasons. Estevez also recently let up one of the largest home runs of the 2024 MLB postseason.
As for the Yankees, fellow righty Luke Weaver appears to be locked in as their closer. However, the Yankees have many other crucial bullpen arms (Tim Hill, Clay Holmes, and Tommy Kahnle) who will be available in free agency this winter. While we’ve just heard about some of the other outside acquisitions that the Yankees are considering, it appears that relief pitchers will also be a top priority.
