A Washington Commanders player committed an awful mistake that sealed his team’s destiny in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
With 1:02 remaining at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, the Steelers led 28-27 and faced a fourth-and-one at midfield. Mike Tomlin chose to keep his offence on the field rather than punt, although the coach may not have intended to run a play. Russell Wilson approached the line of scrimmage and employed the hard count, which somehow worked
Commanders rookie defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton jumped into the neutral zone, giving the Steelers a first down. Pittsburgh was then free to kneel for the rest of the clock
.Talk about a novice mistake.
If Newton had not jumped offsides, the Steelers would most likely have punted. There were no timeouts left for the Commanders, therefore Jayden Daniels’ game-winning field goal drive was not certain. But Newton made it so Washington did not even have a final opportunity.
