It is safe to say that the Green Bay Packers’ two major free agency signings this summer have gone as well as expected. Safety Xavier McKinney is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions, while running back Josh Jacobs is third with 762 rushing yards. Jacobs also ranks third in rushing attempts (158), sixth in runs of 20 yards or more, and fifth in rushing yards per game (84.7).
Jacobs has been vital to the Packers offence, particularly while quarterback Jordan Love was injured. Jacobs rushed for 151 yards on 34 runs in Green Bay’s second game of the season, the first in which Love missed due to a sprained MCL. When Love suffered a groin injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jacobs carried the weight, rushing for 127 yards on 25 carries and scoring two touchdowns.
However, it was in Green Bay’s third game of the season, against the Tennessee Titans, that Jacobs received a huge fine from the NFL.
Green Bay Packers’ Running Back Josh Jacobs Was Fined Over $45,000 For Lowering His Head.
Jacobs had 14 carries for 43 yards against Tennessee, and backup quarterback Malik Willis helped the Packers win their second game without Love. Jacobs received a $45,020 fine for lowering his head on a play where he was not flagged, making it one of the highest fines in the NFL this year, according to Pelissero. For reference, Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was fined little more than $20,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Bo Melton and flipping off Packers fans on his way off the field.
Jacobs, of course, appealed the fine.
After nearly a month and a half, the NFL has rescinded Jacobs’ fine. That is, he is not required to pay it because the league acknowledged that it made a mistake in fining him in the first place.
