Jared Goff is the former No. 1 overall choice of the Los Angeles Rams, who has spent time in the spotlight as a Super Bowl quarterback in Los Angeles as well as time on the down side as the guy dealt to Detroit for Matthew Stafford. Goff has won over Detroit Lions fans and colleagues with his polished, determined quarterback performance, which culminated in two playoff victories last season and a close call in the NFC final game against San Francisco.
On Sunday, Goff found himself in unknown territory on the road in Houston, throwing five interceptions against a ferocious Texans defence that had dominated Detroit’s backfield for much of the first half. Goff spoke to reporters following the Lions’ stunning 26-23 comeback win, revealing what it was like in the huddle while behind 23-7 and continuously tossing the ball to the opposing side. The former California Golden Bear described it as a “mental game,” adding that “every team gets punched in the mouth, and the good ones respond.”
Goff noted that confidence was critical in the Lions’ attempt to scratch and claw their way back to victory over CJ Stroud and the Texans. Hey reassured his teammates that he was fine throughout his problems and helped lead the Lions to their ninth victory over what should be an AFC playoff team. “Ultimately, I never lost confidence because I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to do on most of those plays and our defence really bailed us out,”
Goff stated in reference to Aaron Glenn’s team. “They really did all day, and the guys stuck with me on offence, and I was assuring them, ‘Hey dude, I’m fine. Just hang in there. I’m fine. I said, ‘I’m going to figure this thing out,’ and they remained with me.”
