Kevin O’Connell has the Minnesota Vikings in an excellent position through the first nine games of the 2024 NFL season. As we saw on Sunday, Brian Flores’ work with the Vikings defence since taking over prior to the 2023 season has contributed significantly to the team’s success.
When previous DC Ed Donatell was fired after 2022, Minnesota’s defence was a complete disaster. That changed during Flores’ first season. The Vikings are now in their second year of running that side of the ball and are first in defensive DVOA through 10 weeks.
Flores was the Miami Dolphins’ head coach prior to his hiring in Minnesota. After some early success, his relationship with Dolphins management, the NFL, and his own quarterback had soured. He was not only sacked, but he is now effectively blacklisted from the head coaching carousel.
Will the Minnesota Vikings lose Brian Flores?
Given all of the baggage that comes with hiring Brian Flores, it’s unclear whether he’ll be given another chance as an NFL head coach. But that does not imply he has abandoned his dream.

Yes, Flo is thriving in his current position, but he wants to be a head coach again, as he stated on Adam Schefter’s podcast on Tuesday.
“Look, there’s only 32 of these jobs, so I would certainly want to be a head coach in this league again… for me personally, I think [being a head coach] is something that I would love to do again.”
The issue is how things concluded in Miami. Tua Tagovailoa is out there talking about what a terrible person he is, and he has a major lawsuit against the NFL. Flores’ time with the Dolphins has left him with some difficult sentiments.
Flores remains hopeful for another head coaching chance.
He still has an ongoing case against the NFL and numerous franchises. Nobody doubts Flo’s mental capacity and/or ‘football guy’ status to return as head coach. His Tua troubles and lawsuit against the league will not assist his chances of getting another head coaching position. However, Flores does not appear to believe that these issues are deal breakers.
“I believe that many individuals perceive the Miami experience as entirely negative. I honestly don’t. I believe it was a wonderful experience for myself and my family. During my time there, I acquired valuable lessons that have improved my coaching skills in numerous areas.
And as I look on that time, there are certainly things I would do differently, but there are also many things I would keep doing. However, not everything was negative. Obviously, there were some things I might have done better, but I thought it was a terrific experience, and I came out of it feeling very optimistic and thrilled about where I am today. “I learned a lot from it.”

This could be Flores’ final season with Minnesota. After being overlooked a year ago, his name could be in high demand this summer. There are definite obstacles in hiring a person suing your peers, but ultimately an organization’s goal is to win.
