The San Diego Padres came closest to defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 postseason, as Los Angeles dominated its way to a World Series championship. However, the Padres cannot settle for close. Not with superstars like Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, and Dylan Cease on the team and on the payroll.
One player who had a breakout season in 2024 was outfielder Jurickson Profar. Profar had a.689 OPS and a negative WAR in 2023, but improved to.839 OPS and 3.4 WAR in 2024. Profar is currently a free agent and one of San Diego’s top targets. FanSided’s Nick Villano recently investigated Profar’s impending free agency. Villano expects Profar to re-sign with the Padres, while Spotrac predicts a two-year, $25 million contract. “Profar has been through a lot, and part of it is his fault. He finally found a place to call home, and he has already signed a lease after departing once,” Villano stated.
“The Padres want him back, and Profar is simply looking for a commitment.” We can see the Padres making that move, especially because they will most likely receive some sort of hometown discount.” Profar’s return to the Padres just makes too much sense not to happen. San Diego has to recruit new talent in a significant way without breaking the pocketbook. Profar’s return as a 3.0-plus WAR player would be exactly what the squad needed.
