The Buffalo Bills are entering the bye week on the heels of a stunning win against the Kansas City Chiefs, and they may have received even more good news following quarterback Josh Allen’s injury scare.
Allen had his throwing hand examined by the team’s medical staff following a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel in the 30-21 win on November 14, which drew attention from the CBS broadcast team. Though Allen was able to return and later rumble for a game-winning 26-yard touchdown run, there were some concerns that the ailment may continue.
Sean McDermott, the team’s head coach, has put those anxieties to rest, stating that nothing untoward emerged following the game.
Josh Allen is healthy and resting During the bye week, McDermott reported that Allen was assessed by head trainer Nate Breske and no injuries were found.
“I think we’re going to get him a new [hand] over the bye week here,” McDermott joked to reporters, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. “No, as far as I know, Nate, our trainer, has expressed no concern about it at this time, so maybe that will continue. So that’s all I know for now.
Allen will now get two weeks off after leading the Bills to a victory and bringing the team’s record to 9-2. Though there were no new injuries reported during the Chiefs game, Allen injured his left (non-throwing) hand earlier this season and has been wearing a protective glove.
The Bills quarterback is no stranger to bumps and bruises, having spent time nursing injuries over the last several seasons. Allen experienced an early-season shoulder injury in 2023, forcing him to adjust his throwing technique for the rest of the season. During the offseason, the Bills quarterback worked with a sports science company to improve his efficiency.
The upcoming bye week could also help another Bills star who is hoping to return from injury. Linebacker Matt Milano, who missed the majority of the 2023 season with a fractured leg and was sidelined again in training camp with a torn pectoral, was activated from injured reserve and returned to practice.
Milano might return for the Bills’ next game against the San Francisco 49ers, providing a significant boost to their defence.
Josh Allen Takes Lead in MVP Race.
While leading the Bills to their greatest start in over three decades, Allen has also received some personal recognition. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor named him the second-best MVP candidate, trailing only Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Pryor stated that Allen “made his most convincing case yet” in Sunday’s win over the Chiefs, citing his game-winning touchdown run as a significant boost to his prospects of finally earning the award.
“Perhaps the most impressive part of Allen’s MVP campaign is that he’s doing it without an established Robin to his Batman,” according to Pryor. “Since the Stefon Diggs trade, the Bills have depended on an ensemble cast rather than an excellent top receiver. Nonetheless, Allen is having success moving the ball around. “Eleven different Bills players have caught touchdown passes from him.”
