On Sunday, the Washington Commanders came close to pulling off an incredible comeback against the Dallas Cowboys, but fell agonizingly short in a 34-26 loss. Dan Quinn made one important decision that stood out in the fourth quarter.
After Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin scored a late touchdown with 21 seconds remaining to pull Washington within one, Quinn decided to send Austin Seibert and the field goal team out to try for a tie. Seibert missed the extra point, leaving the score at 27-26 and raising questions about why Quinn didn’t go for the two-point conversion and the win. After the game, Quinn told reporters that he never contemplated keeping the offence on the field and going for two.
Seibert had just returned from injury and struggled throughout Sunday’s game. He missed a field goal and both extra point attempts in the loss, including the game-tying PAT following McLaurin’s touchdown.
Had Quinn elected to keep Jayden Daniels and company on the field and go for the victory, they may have grabbed a one-point lead with little time to spare against a Cooper Rush-led Dallas offence. Instead, they fell to 7-5, their third consecutive loss, with Quinn confessing that going for two had never entered his mind.
