The Minnesota Twins will need to add to their roster this offseason. They will be charged with accomplishing so despite minimal resources. Derek Falvey, president of baseball operations, is expected to be inventive in terms of roster management.
RHP Alex Speas signed with the Minnesota Twins.
On Sunday morning, he made an early move on a low-risk, high-reward former Houston Astro, signing free agent pitcher Alex Speas to a minor league contract. His agency, Munger English Sports Management, announced the news.
Speas must be pleased with how the free agency process worked out for him. He switched counsel earlier this month, and Munger English only took a few weeks to secure him a contract. The Texas Rangers drafted the right-handed pitcher in the second round in 2016.
He is now 26 years old and has had brief outings in the major leagues with Texas and the Houston Astros. Interestingly, the lone major league game he pitched in 2024 was against his new employer.
What are the Twins getting at Speas?
There’s not much to learn from four innings in the major leagues. However, on the farm, the results have been mixed. He has missed numerous seasons due to injury and has a 12.13 ERA in 29 2/3 innings at Triple-A last year.
Speas has a lifetime 13.9 K/9 in 171 1/3 minor league innings. That is clearly what the Twins are attempting to harness. The concern is that the strikeout rate comes with an 8.4 BB/9 ratio. Speas’ fastball averaged 98.5 mph with the Astros last season.
No one has figured out the control concerns yet, but this signing appears to be a more aggressive initiative, similar to Hobie Harris a year ago. Perhaps Minnesota will strike gold and make it work.
