Following the Detroit Lions’ exciting 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field on Thursday night, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was still processing an incident that occurred before the game even began. A Lions supporter who had been assigned with holding the pre-game flag abandoned his duties to approach the Packers’ bench and engage in a verbal dispute with LaFleur, resulting in a tense discussion that irritated the Packers coach.”I’ve never been a part of something like that,” LaFleur stated after the game, plainly disturbed by the fan’s behaviour. “He was talking junk to our players, giving them the throat slash sign, and you’re trying to de-escalate it and then he gets in my face.”
LaFleur, who has coached numerous games at all levels, was surprised by the amount of vitriol. He regarded the episode as unsportsmanlike, stating that he had never seen a supporter attack a coach in this manner.
“I thought it was pretty unsportsmanlike; I’ve never seen that, and I’ve been on a lot of fields, and they usually police that much better,” LaFleur said, alluding to security’s refusal to act. “I thought it was an arrogant fan that wanted to get a part of the action and just – I would like to see security, or something step in there and get them out of there, because it’s – he shouldn’t be doing that.”
Dan Skipper praises the Lions fan who talked trash to Matt Lafleur.
The fan’s actions appeared to irritate LaFleur, but the Lions’ final triumph left him with little time to linger on the incident. While the Packers’ head coach was plainly disturbed by the fans’ behaviour, the actual story of the game was the Lions’ tenacious play, which helped them secure the victory and continue their great season.
Despite LaFleur’s dissatisfaction, the fan’s antics could have simply been part of the tense environment at Ford Field, where the Lions and Packers’ animosity was on full show. For LaFleur, however, this was an experience he would prefer not repeat, and he expressed his hope that such behaviour will be addressed more effectively in the future.
