HUGE SWAP DEAL: Yankees Swap Marcus Stroman for $80M Former MVP in Three-Team Trade Agreement

The New York Yankees are spending the majority of their time attempting to re-sign outfielder Juan Soto. However, after reaching the World Series for the first time since 2009, general manager Brian Cashman will need to fill multiple roster holes. Could he find a way to get Chicago Cubs outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger to the Bronx? After Bellinger unexpectedly agreed to his $27.5 million salary for 2025, the Cubs appear to be seeking to get rid of him after only two years in Chicago.

Will Cody Bellinger Exercise His Option To Stay With The Cubs?

In 569 plate appearances in 2024, he hit.266/.325/.426 with 18 homers, 23 doubles, 78 RBI, and 72 runs scored. The 2019 National League MVP Award winner has been linked to the Yankees as a potential fit on several occasions in previous years. Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes Bellinger should wear pinstripes regardless of where Soto ends up.

He gave a scenario of a three-team trade that would reduce starting pitcher Marcus Stroman’s $18 million payroll and bring Bellinger to New York. “The Yanks sending Stroman to the (San Francisco) Giants who were interested in him last year, San Francisco dealing Taylor Rogers to the Cubs, who would still save a lot in 2025 and potentially all of 2026 by sending Bellinger to The Bronx,” Sherman penned.

Marcus Stroman sent to Yankees' bullpen
Stroman had a 10-9 record, a 4.31 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, and 113 strikeouts in 154 2/3 innings in his first season with the Yankees. He was not a factor in New York’s march to the Fall Classic, and he made no appearances in the postseason. He may not be a significant part of the club’s immediate plans, as they have been in communication with top free-agent hurlers Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. Bellinger is entering his second season on a three-year, $80 million contract. He can opt out and test free agency again next winter. Landing the left-handed slugger would provide the Yankees with an immediate and short-term solution at first base.
