The New York Yankees may try to sign one of the greatest closers available this offseason.
Tanner Scott, a free agent closer, is becoming more linked to the Yankees
According to FanSided’s Jacob Mountz, Scott’s name is making ripples in Yankees circles after former two-time All-Star closer Clay Holmes left for the New York Mets in free agency on Saturday (h/t Sam Scott of Motorcyclesports.net).
“The Yankees can now explore the market for a reliable closer, and one name making waves is San Diego Padres’ Tanner Scott,” wrote Jacob Mountz of FanSided. “Scott’s outstanding performance, which included a 1.75 ERA, 84 strikeouts over 72 innings, and an All-Star selection, places him as a valuable asset in the offseason bullpen hunt. Despite an estimated cost of $54 million over four years, Scott’s proven track record provides the Yankees with a dependable option in close game scenarios.
Scott is an outstanding closer that the Yankees should pursue.
Scott was quite effective in 2024. Last season, he recorded a career-high 22 saves and an impressive 1.75 ERA while striking out 84. The 2024 All-Star earned 4.0 WAR and demonstrated his significance to a victorious San Diego baseball team.
Now that Holmes has joined the Mets as a starter, the Yankees will need a new ninth-inning specialist to fill his shoes. Scott is efficient and powerful enough to take on that role and assist the Bronx Bombers win the World Series in 2025.
Winter meetings may influence whether the Yankees go after Scott.
The Ohio native is costly, but he is one of a few top-tier candidates the Yankees might pursue if they are determined to have an exceptional bullpen next season. The Yankees might choose to deal significant components for Milwaukee Brewers two-time National League Reliever of the Year Devin Williams, who has also been linked to the organization in trade rumours, or shuffle their deck to sign Scott.
The winter meetings, which begin on Monday, may yield former Yankees superstar free agent Juan Soto’s much-anticipated decision on where he will play next. If the Yankees do not have to pay $600 million or more on a long-term contract to re-sign Soto, they might use some of that money to pay Scott.
