The Atlanta Falcons maintain a precarious grip on the NFC South.
Despite being in first place entering Week 14’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, the Falcons are 6-6 after losing three consecutive games.
During the losing skid, quarterback Kirk Cousins has not thrown a touchdown pass and has been intercepted six times, four of which came in last Sunday’s four-point loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Fans have been calling for a quarterback change after Cousins’ difficulties, with first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. waiting in the wings.
With the Falcons still in the postseason picture, would they change starting quarterbacks in the final few weeks of the season?
Atlanta Falcons stand by starter Kirk Cousins.
Despite Cousins’ struggles in recent weeks, the Falcons have no plans to replace him at quarterback.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that head coach Raheem Morris will remain with Cousins.
“Around the league, other coaches have pointed out Morris’s steadiness and belief in the quarterback, knowing it’s never easy when you have a top draft pick sitting on the bench behind you,” Russini tells me. “There is no denying Cousins’ bad performance last week, but the team isn’t listening to those calling for Michael Penix Jr. I’m told that no internal discussions about a QB switch have occurred at this time. Atlanta is expressing faith in Cousins, especially given the added motivation of facing his former team, the Minnesota Vikings, on Sunday.
According to Russini, the Falcons are currently supporting Cousins, though this might change if the team continues to struggle.
Cousins has passed for 3,052 yards this season, with 17 touchdowns and an NFL-high 13 interceptions.
The Falcons are a six-point road underdog versus the Vikings.
