The Chicago White Sox have practically all of the superstar power in the trade market this winter. While a few other teams have floated some players for trade, like Ryan Helsley, Alec Bohm, and Devin Williams, the White Sox’s Luis Robert Jr. and Garrett Crochet have dominated the headlines.
Crochet is the more popular of the two. His deal is still considerably smaller, and he has such a high upside that any team would want to bring him in. According to Spotrac, he is expected to sign a deal worth roughly $130 million when he enters free agency in 2027.
“The San Diego Padres would love him (Crochet), and have dealt plenty of prospects in the past, but told the White Sox they are hanging onto catcher Ethan Salas and shortstop Leodalis De Vries,” Nightengale penned. “The (Boston) Red Sox lurk. In the end, the White Sox will trade him to the team that provides them the most valuable prospects and hope they never have another season like their awful 41-121 record.”
The Padres could look for another starter. They have been linked to Japanese free agent Roki Sasaki, so if they are unable to sign Sasaki in the coming weeks, their focus may go to Crochet.
The Red Sox are allegedly hoping to sign multiple starters, with Crochet and free agent Max Fried appearing to be the best fit. If the Red Sox miss out on Fried in free agency, I anticipate them to crank up the fire and look to their deep farm system.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently wrote about his trade market, comparing him to two strong competitors this winter.
