The San Diego Padres have suddenly indicated that they are willing to trade All-Star pitcher Dylan Cease this offseason. Cease improved in 2024 compared to 2023, ending with a 3.47 ERA. The right-hander is a force who would elevate any rotation as a healthy pitcher who has made at least 32 starts in the last four years and placed in the top four in the Cy Young Award voting in two of the last three seasons.

David Stearns has demonstrated a clear method for rotating starting pitchers in favour of shorter-term, lower-commitment contracts with potential to develop pitchers in the Mets’ pitching lab. Furthermore, Stearns has been hesitant to make trades involving elite prospects, particularly those with limited contractual control.
However, the historic acquisition of Juan Soto places the franchise in a win-now situation, necessitating an MLB-level roster to contend with the tough NL East and the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. To compete, the upside pitching experiment may be successful, but the danger of the entire plan failing is significant, thus Stearns will need to explore trading for an ace.

His repertoire is strong, with five of his six pitches having a batting average of.245 or lower against his opponents, and the sweeper and slider having a slugging percentage of only.260.
To land Cease, the Mets need an MLB-ready player to keep the Padres competitive. Luisangel Acuña is a good alternative, especially if the Padres move Luis Arraez as planned. Ryan Clifford, a top 100 prospect who can play in both the outfield and first base, is a crucial option for the Mets’ farm system reestablishment. The transaction also involves the Mets’ number eight prospect, pitcher Blade Tidwell.
In a package like the one offered, the Padres would receive a value comparable to what they spent for Cease last winter, while the Mets would gain a long-awaited ace for their rotation. Finally, the Mets must balance these elements against their current window of contention and their long-term goals for the club.
