The San Diego Padres are reportedly trying to reduce their payroll this offseason. Jeff Passan reported on Thursday that Padres general manager A.J. Preller is looking to offload money.
As a result, the Padres are anticipated to shop for established veterans. This includes Jake Cronenworth and Luis Arraez, who are owed a combined $93 million. “San Diego general manager A.J. Preller, always willing to consider creative deals, could move infielders Jake Cronenworth or Luis Arraez,” according to Passan. “With a paucity of on-the-dirt free agents, either would bring back a premium.” Teams like the New York Yankees are constantly looking for ways to strengthen their rosters.
FanSided baseball writer Jacob Mountz says Arraez might benefit the Yankees, but they should avoid Cronenworth. “Luis Arraez is a prime rental target the Yankees could look to swing,” according to Mountz. “Cronenworth, on the other hand, would provide several years of control. So far, Cronenworth’s reputation does not justify trading for him.
Acquiring Arraez would allow the Yankees to return Jazz Chisholm Jr. to centerfield, where he was more effective. Cronenworth could turn things around, but if he doesn’t, he’ll be on the hook for a long contract. Brian Cashman, the Yankees’ general manager, continues to consider both players. However, the Yankees appear to be seeking for a big-league hitter to man the hot corner at third base. The infield market is expected to stay stagnant until Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman find new organizations. The Yankees have been tied to both of these.
