The San Diego Padres are seeking to improve their roster this winter. San Diego has always been a few steps behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, but this winter, the Padres could get a step ahead of their rivals.
Both the Dodgers and the Padres were reportedly interested in trade candidate Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals. But, with the Dodgers hesitating to make a deal, the Padres could steal him before Los Angeles has a chance.
Here’s a deal that could get Arenado to the Padres before the Dodgers sign him: San Diego Padres receive: 3B. Nolan Arenado gets $20 million. The St. Louis Cardinals receive: OF Tirso Ornelas (number 18 prospect) This transaction is simple. The Cardinals would trade Arenado and $20 million to the Padres in exchange for Tirso Ornelas, the No. 18 prospect.
The Padres’ lack of need for an infielder is what makes this deal implausible. San Diego’s infield is stacked with high-paid players. But if the Friars want to move some players around to make room for Arenado, this is a simple method to add another Gold Glover to the roster. Tirso Ornelas, the team’s No. 18 prospect, would return to Saint Louis. Ornelas had a.864 OPS in Triple-A last season, and he has steadily developed throughout his professional career.
The Cardinals may need another outfielder to fight for a roster place in 2025. This deal is doubtful, but if the Padres start dumping players like Luis Arraez, they could become serious contenders for Arenado.
