As the NFL Playoffs get near, Josh Jacobs and the Green Bay Packers have added some excellent depth in the backfield.
The Packers will get the opportunity to test drive a productive rookie running back while Jacobs is busy keeping Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores up at night. With two games left in the regular season, the Packers added rookie running back Deshaun Fenwick to the practice squad on Tuesday.
Fenwick was cut loose after training camp before being selected by the Packers and brought to the practice squad with two crucial games left before the postseason starts. Fenwick was originally signed by the New England Patriots this spring as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Oregon State.
Fenwick, who is 6 foot 223 pounds and possesses a lot of explosiveness, ran for 2,039 yards and 18 touchdowns at an average of 5.3 yards per carry during his six NCAA seasons at Oregon State and South Carolina.
Ahead of the draft, Hula Bowl Scout Jake Kernen described Fenwick as a well-rounded back with strength, speed, and vision. “Who do I believe will be an NFL player? He is significantly older than most draft selections at his position, though, and lacks top qualities.
Although it’s unclear if the Packers will ever see Fenwick on the field, he might demand playing time if Green Bay’s backfield sustains an injury in the upcoming weeks and possibly carve out a spot in 2025 with a productive offseason.
