The New York Yankees are done with Gleyber Torres. Torres agreed to a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, according to a story published Friday by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Is Brandon Lowe of the Tampa Bay Rays a possible trade target for general manager Brian Cashman to replace him? In public, Torres expressed his desire to play in the Bronx for the duration of his career. But the Yankees never gave the impression that they were serious about getting back together. Based on the agreement he made with Detroit, Cashman could have easily brought the 28-year-old back if he had wanted to.
To take Torres’ spot in the lineup and in the infield, New York has a number of outside choices. The Yankees could attempt to persuade the Rays to trade Lowe inside the American League East in addition to targeting specific free agents. Jackson Roberts of Sporting News suggested the following fictitious trade:
The second baseman is given to the Yankees. Lowe, Brandon The Rays acquire right-handed pitcher Ben Hess and second baseman/third baseman Jorbit Vivas. According to MLB.com, Hess (eighth) and Vivas (17th) were among the Yankees’ top 20 prospects at the end of the 2024 season. Since making an appearance in 149 games in 2021, Lowe hasn’t participated in more than 109 games. But in that time, he has produced three seasons with 21 or more home runs.
A reliable addition to the Yankees’ order, the 29-year-old has a.794 OPS over his last 1,742 plate appearances. Additionally, the Yankees wouldn’t incur significant financial burdens from this kind of purchase. The Rays exercised Lowe’s $10.5 million 2025 option, but he signed a six-year, $24 million contract in 2024. According to Spotrac, he also has a $11.5 million club option for 2026 before he has the opportunity to enter free agency.
