Luis Castillo, a three-time All-Star starting pitcher, might be traded this offseason. The Dodgers aren’t regarded as the Dominican pitcher’s top suitor, though.
Infield players are desperately needed by the Seattle Mariners. Seattle might think about dealing pitchers in their rotation, which is perhaps the finest in the Major Leagues, to counteract the lack of support in the infield. Castillo, an eight-season veteran, and four younger pitchers make up the Mariners’ five reliable starters.
The primary pitcher that the Mariners would think about trading for is Castillo. To cover Castillo’s absence, Seattle would probably need clubs to provide a starter and infielder.
The Dodgers might still think about expanding their rotation even if they signed two-time Cy Young pitcher Blake Snell to a five-year deal. Given that he will only owe $68.25 million over the next three years, Castillo would be wise financially.
Gavin Lux, second baseman, is available to the Dodgers as an infielder. Dylan Moore, the Mariners’ 2024 American League Gold Glove winner and a versatile shortstop and second baseman, would probably share time with him.
Lux recuperated from ACL surgery and missed the entire 2023 season. Lux had a rough start to the season at the plate after his return in 2024. However, the Wisconsin native helped the Dodgers win the National League West by slashing.304/.390/.508 in the second half of the season.
However, Nick Deeds of MLB Trade Rumours is unsure if that would be sufficient.
“Gavin Lux might be a good platoon partner for Moore at second base, but it doesn’t seem likely that the Mariners would part with Castillo even if Lux were paired with a young starter like Landon Knack,” Deeds wrote.
Knack had a 3-5 record in the regular season with a 3.65 ERA, 69 strikeouts, and 1.10 WHIP. Knack pitched in the bullpen during the Dodgers’ journey to the World Series. In Game 2 of the NL Championship Series, however, he faltered and gave up five of the seven runs scored by the New York Mets.
Despite the fact that Lux and Knack were both excellent performers for the Dodgers this season, it doesn’t seem plausible that the Mariners will trade Castillo for them. Deeds views them as a long shot in the sweepstakes as a result.
