One of the top players from the transfer site has been acquired by Kentucky.
David Gusta, a transfer defensive lineman from Washington State, informed Hayes Fawcett of his commitment to the Wildcats on Saturday night. Gusta is the best prospect at his position and the portal’s second-ranked defensive lineman. He’s on an official visit in Lexington right now.
Gusta told On3 earlier this week, “I like the coaching staff and d-line coach and I see what they’ve produced with guys like Deone Walker.” Additionally, I discovered that my uncles reside close to the campus, so I’ll have relatives there, and the plan works well. Additionally, I’ve heard nothing but positive things about the strength staff. There are genuinely kind people in the world.
During the previous season, the 6-foot-3, 300-pound Gusta recorded three tackles for loss, one sack, three pass breakups, and 21 tackles. Tennessee and Texas A&M were also considered for the California native. Gusta, a senior redshirt, is still eligible for one more year.
Several schools, including Nevada, Fresno State, New Mexico, Arizona, and others, extended offers to Gusta, a three-star recruit from San Bernandino, California. He initially committed to Fresno State, but in July 2020 he switched to Washington State, where he played for Pullman for the following four seasons.
Gusta did not play a game during his freshman season in 2021, hence he was redshirted. However, he played 10 games for the Cougars in 2022, including one start, and saw a lot of action on the field. He recorded eleven tackles in the end. Gusta became a full-time starter in 2023 after finishing as a redshirt sophomore with 30 tackles, three quarterback hurries, two tackles for loss, and half a sack.
However, 2024 was undoubtedly his most successful campaign to date. According to Pro Football Focus, he had the fourth-best pass rush grade (82.4) of any interior defensive lineman in the nation and was second on the team with 22 quarterback hurries. He is one of the Top 50 players to sign up for the portal this offseason, according to On3.
He is now coming to play SEC football. Gusta is the ‘Cats’ fifteenth portal commit since the 2024 season ended.
