DEAL AGREED: Former St. Louis Cardinals Outfielder Set For Reunion With Mike Shildt in San Diego

Moisés Gómez, a former minor leaguer for the St. Louis Cardinals, seemed to be headed for the Major League squad. Gómez was a dominant player at Double-A Springfield in 2022 after joining the Cardinals after the 2021 season. Gómez’s slash line in 60 games was.321/.401/.705, which translated into an OPS of 1.106. Gómez was promoted to Triple-A Memphis that season after hitting 23 home runs and accumulating 54 RBIs.

Gómez won the 2022 Joe Bauman Award for the best home run hitter in the minor levels with a total of 39 home runs at Springfield and Memphis.

Gómez was a member of the Cardinals’ 40-man roster and the 14th-ranked prospect heading into the 2023 season. Gómez was poised to reach St. Louis with the momentum he established in 2022, particularly if he could reduce the number of strikeouts.

Unfortunately, it was not intended to be.

In 131 games with the Redbirds, Gómez struck out 180 times and had a dismal OBP of.293 despite hitting 30 home runs at Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals lost the chance to sell Gómez when his stock was high, according to my colleague Thomas Gauvain.

Last January, the Cardinals designated Gómez for assignment ahead of the 2024 season. He returned to the Memphis Redbirds that season, but in 41 games, Gómez failed to come close to the power display he showed in prior seasons, as reflected by a terrible .299 SLG. Gómez joined the Kansas City Monarchs of the Independent League in July after being cut loose by the Cardinals.

Mike Shildt speaks fondly of his old team, the Cardinals, and his new team, the Padres

In 2025, he will be able to join an MLB team. Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumours claims that Gómez agreed to a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres last month. He will reunite with former Cardinals manager Mike Shildt with the Padres organization, and he might be able to regain the authority he formerly shown.
