The Chicago Bears have had a busy week. Press conferences on Tuesday have given us the gift of total and utter chaos, disorder, and, to be honest, laughable material just one week into the offseason.
It was challenging to get any genuine vision or agreement from the three of them after listening to people like Ryan Poles, Kevin Warren, and George McCaskey. As usual, we were left with more questions than answers by the pressers, which isn’t usually the case.
In Chicago, though? This is typical.
Naturally, the Bears’ head coaching position is one of the most talked-about subjects at the moment. Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, is also a strong contender for the position. Johnson is seen by many as the front-runner for the position. There might be some reservations, though, regarding owner George McCaskey, general manager Ryan Poles, and the front office’s genuine alignment.
Adam Hoge, a well-known team beat reporter, spoke extensively about the possibility of employing Johnson in relation to Poles and his contract position on the most recent episode of the CHGO Bears podcast.
Above all, Hoge made a quite audacious prediction about what may occur between Johnson and Poles.
Ryan Poles’ contract extension could result directly from Ben Johnson’s hiring.
“If they do hit it off and they are aligned after the interview process, that you probably will see Ryan Poles get a contract extension,” Hoge said.
That would be something, right? As has been extensively documented, we are largely unaware of Poles’ contract status. The Bears have strangely and secretly withheld the specifics of Poles’ deal.
His contract’s exact duration and whether he was given an extension at any point are unknown. To put it mildly, it’s really strange.
The Bears’ continued dysfunction is demonstrated by Kevin Warren’s most recent remarks on Ryan Poles.
According to the most recent information, Poles’ contract would expire following the 2025 season, for a total of four years. What Hoge is saying makes a lot of sense if that’s the case.
Johnson has two requirements for accepting a head coaching position: front office alignment and continuity between the general manager and head coach. Naturally, the Bears are a symbol of dysfunction in that region.
Therefore, it does make a lot of sense for Poles and Johnson to want to spend more than a year together in Halas Hall if they had a fruitful meeting and develop a strong bond. Johnson might even want Poles to receive an extension so that they can work together to create a plan that lasts more than a year.
Some Bears supporters may not want to hear this, but Poles may end up staying with the team for a lot longer than was first thought. Now, if it means Caleb Williams becomes a star and the team eventually finds the perfect head coach, then so be it.
Let it be so if, in the end, it proves to be worthwhile.
