Paul Goldschmidt, Devin Williams, Cody Bellinger, and Max Fried were all huge offseason signings for the New York Yankees. But after allowing Gleyber Torres to enter free agency, they have an infield gap that needs to be filled.
Nolan Arenado and Ryan Helsley could be acquired by the Yankees in a blockbuster trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report pointed out that if the Yankees were to trade for Arenado, they “coult covet” a package deal with both All-Stars. “The Yankees could covet a package deal of Arenado and All-Star closer Ryan Helsley, as slotting him alongside Luke Weaver and newcomer Devin Williams at the back of their bullpen would give them a formidable late-inning trio,” Reuter reported. Arenado signed an eight-year, $260 million agreement with the Colorado Rockies in 2019, and he now has three seasons remaining on it. After the season, Helsley will be a free agent, and according to Spotrac, he will get a six-year, $81 million contract.
Arenado would meet the Yankees’ obvious need. Jazz Chisholm Jr. would replace Torres at second base while he took over at third base. But in the bullpen, Helsley would be a luxury for the Yankees. After the season, Helsley and Williams will both be free agents, giving the Yankees a chance to evaluate both and determine which, if either, they wish to re-sign. Arenado has been named an All-Star eight times, a Silver Slugger five times, a Gold Glover ten times, and a Platinum Glover six times. Helsley led Major League Baseball in saves in 2024 and has been named to the All-Star team twice. The Yankees may return to the World Series with both.
