On Saturday, January 18, the Detroit Lions play their first playoff game of the season against the Washington Commanders, a somewhat unexpected opponent at number six. I hope it’s not the end of the season for them.
Washington defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions’ first playoff opponent, in a surprising victory on Sunday night, January 12, led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. This weekend, they will travel to Detroit to play the team at Ford Field.
Fortunately, the Lions are starting the playoffs with some positive news. They’ll take any good news they can get because they’re not taking the duty lightly, even if they’re playing the playoffs’ bottom-seeded team.
Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions Provides an Excellent Update
It’s no secret that the Detroit Lions’ biggest weakness this season has been injuries. Just in time for the playoffs, though, that is starting to change. Following a much-needed bye week, the Lions were able to recuperate somewhat.
The positive news that running back David Montgomery is anticipated to return for the Commanders game was virtually confirmed by Lions head coach Dan Campbell in a press conference on Monday, January 13.
Campbell remarked, “It will mean a lot to get Montgomery back on the field.” “Five is really important to us. He is very much a part of us. And he’s a bell cow to me. He sets the tone. He acts as a stimulant. Since he has a position here, he will also have a place in this game. Getting him back will be beneficial.
“As close to a full confirmation as Campbell can give right now to say Montgomery will play against the Washington Commanders on Saturday night,” stated NFL analyst and expert Brad Berreman of SideLion Report in a January 13 feature. “This week’s practice reports should only solidify that,” Berreman continued.
Returning by running In the three games Montgomery missed, Jahmyr Gibbs had outstanding stats, including 487 yards from scrimmage, six total touchdowns, and over 100 rushing yards. However, Montgomery’s return might raise those figures even further.
“Unless something unexpected happens, Montgomery will be back in action for the games that count the most as the Lions try to finish a run to the Super Bowl,” Berreman continued.
New Injury Information for the Lions
Although the offensive line will benefit from Montgomery’s return, other players are eager to return as well. During the press conference, Campbell stated that both cornerback Terrion Arnold and offensive guard Kevin Zeitler had been reacting favourably to treatment. It’s good to hear that they’re progressing nicely, but he made no assurances upon their return.
As they get closer to the playoffs, Campbell added that they should know more about the team’s injury situation on Tuesday, January 14.
