Michigan’s defence earned a huge boost Wednesday when veteran defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny confirmed on social media that he will return to Ann Arbour for the 2025 season, adding another key piece to Wink Martindale’s already strong squad. Benny has been a model of consistency throughout his college career.
Despite cycling behind Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham in 2024, he managed to make an impact with 28 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss in only 10 games. His numbers speak for themselves: 71 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 39 games with the Maize and Blue. “Every time he’s out there, he’s making plays,” defensive line coach Lou Esposito stated earlier this season. “He is productive. He’s tough and physical. I think he plays with incredible emotion.
He’s a high-energy person. After bringing in several great recruits and transfer portal signees, the Wolverines have been putting up a special defence for 2025. Benny joins an intriguing group of returning players that includes edge rusher Derrick Moore and linebacker Jaishawn Barham.
The defensive line rotation appears to be particularly good, with T.J. Guy, Cameron Brandt, Damon Payne, and Clemson transfer Tre Williams all involved. Michigan’s defensive depth extends far beyond its front seven. The secondary received a significant boost as Zeke Berry, Aamir Hall, Brandyn Hillman, and Jyaire Hill all confirmed their comeback.
Ernest Hausmann will return at linebacker, while safety Rod Moore could return fro
m injury to add to his remarkable career totals of 141 tackles, seven pass breakups, and six interceptions. With Martindale slated to remain as defensive coordinator in 2025, the Wolverines’ defence is poised for another strong season.
