The San Diego Padres have the opportunity to add an efficient power hitter to their roster for the 2025 MLB season.
According to Henry Martin of Motorcycle Sports, the Padres are interested in free agent J.D. Martinez.
“The San Diego Padres, who had a DH vacancy last season, are considering Martinez as a strategic addition to their squad. With crucial players like Manny Machado making infrequent appearances at DH, the Padres lack a constant presence in that position,” Martin said.
“Martinez’s acquisition could be critical for the Padres, providing a cost-effective solution to their DH conundrum.” Martinez, a three-time American League Silver Slugger, has a plethora of experience and a powerful bat that might improve San Diego’s offensive lineup.
Martinez may hit for power and average with the Padres in 2025.
Martinez has been an exceptional hitter for most of his career. He’s hit at least 30 home runs five times and possesses a strong.Over 14 seasons in the Majors, he had a batting average of 283. The Florida native blasted 16 home runs and 69 RBIs for the New York Mets in 120 games in 2024.
Martinez had 33 home runs and 103 RBIs for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, with a.271 batting average and.893 OPS. If he can revert to that form in 2023, he will add a feared bat to the Padres’ already star-studded batting lineup.
The 37-year-old slugger, who recently signed a one-year, $12 million deal, could be available for an eight-figure sum or less. San Diego would be able to establish him in their designated hitter position, which was operated by committee last time out. Despite his age, he’d be a smart short-term investment, since he still appears to have strong baseball in him.
