Every year, when MLB free agency rolls around, the Detroit Tigers aren’t the X-Factors in terms of signing the best players available. While they did not add Juan Soto or Roki Sasaki, the Tigers did make some history with their latest signing.
The Detroit Tigers have signed Kenny Serwa, a viral social media celebrity.
According to Tread Athletics, the Detroit Tigers have signed pitcher Kenny Serwa to a minor-league deal. Who is Kenny Serwa?
He’s a pitcher who just went famous on social media after throwing the quickest knuckleball ever recorded. Serwa’s knuckleball has reached 88.5 mph and averages 87 mph. He’s not just a’speed’ knuckleballer, however. Serwa also has a slower variant, which is usually 5-10 mph slower than his ‘quick knuckleball.’
Amazingly, only three knuckleballs have surpassed 84 mph since the pitch-tracking era began in 2008.
Of course, he isn’t a one-pitch wonder. The 27-year-old righty also throws a sinker and curveball, as well as a 94 mph four-seam fastball.
Serwa most recently pitched in the Independent American Association, where his ERA was 4.22. However, the Tigers are now giving him an opportunity to distinguish himself in the professional leagues. This will be his first opportunity to join an MLB team, but he still has a long way to go before reaching the majors.
