Jose Iglesias, a New York Mets infielder, became a fan favourite in Queens during the 2024 season.
Iglesias brought an effervescent energy to the locker room and clutch hitting to the field. In 85 games, he slashed.337/.381/.448 with a 137 OPS+, collecting 16 doubles and 91 hits, scoring 39 runs, and earning 3.1 WAR.
The veteran infielder, who missed the 2023 season, has found new life with the Mets after signing a one-year contract. His prior stops were with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels, and Colorado Rockies.
Aside from his on-field achievements, Iglesias rose to mainstream prominence when his single “OMG” peaked at number one on the Billboard and iTunes charts. He even performed the hit song at Citi Field after a Mets victory in June 2024.
However, New York’s latest signing may mark the end of Iglesias’ tenure with the squad.
The New York Mets have signed a former first-round pick to a split contract.
Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that the Mets have signed infielder Nick Madrigal to a split contract. The contract offers varying wages for major- and minor-league service time.
Madrigal, the Chicago White Sox’s fourth overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, is known for his contact-oriented approach. Last season with the Chicago Cubs, he hit.221/.280/.256 with a 54 OPS+ in 51 games, collecting 19 hits in 86 at-bats and scoring five runs.
Madrigal, a former top prospect, has a.274/.323/.344 slash line, an 86 OPS+, and 3.0 WAR in five major-league seasons with the White Sox and Cubs. While he rarely strikes out (85 times in 940 plate appearances), he also exhibits little patience at the plate (43 career walks).
The 27-year-old will fight for playing time in the Mets’ infield alongside Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, and Luisangel Acuna. His arrival likely ends Iglesias’ remarkable 2024 campaign in Queens.
