The Detroit Lions have swiftly put an end to any trade speculation surrounding quarterback Hendon Hooker before it could gain momentum. Despite some outside speculation that the Lions might explore moving the second-year quarterback, the team has reportedly shown no interest in parting ways with the young signal-caller.
Hooker, a 2023 third-round draft pick out of Tennessee, spent the majority of his rookie season recovering from an ACL injury sustained in college. While he didn’t see game action last season, the Lions have remained committed to his development behind veteran starter Jared Goff. Detroit’s coaching staff views Hooker as a long-term project with significant upside, making a trade unlikely.
NFL insiders initially sparked rumors of a potential Hooker trade, citing the Lions’ solidified quarterback situation with Goff and the possibility of gaining additional draft capital. However, team sources quickly dismissed the idea, emphasizing that Hooker remains a valued part of their future plans.
“We drafted Hendon with the intention of developing him, and that hasn’t changed,” a team source told reporters. “He’s learning, growing, and exactly where we want him to be.”
The Lions’ decision to keep Hooker in the fold makes strategic sense. Goff, who has led Detroit to back-to-back winning seasons and a deep playoff run, remains the unquestioned starter for now. However, his long-term future with the franchise remains uncertain as contract talks loom. Keeping Hooker gives the team an insurance policy should negotiations with Goff stall or if the team decides to move in a different direction in the coming years.
Hooker’s strong college resume, which included an SEC Offensive Player of the Year award in 2022, suggests he has the tools to succeed at the next level. The Lions are in no rush to move on from him, preferring instead to groom him as a potential successor.
For now, trade talks are nothing more than outside noise. Detroit remains committed to its plan, and Hendon Hooker isn’t going anywhere.
