For Xander Bogaerts, what was old will become new again.
Padres manager Mike Shildt confirmed that Bogaerts will return to shortstop in San Diego’s 2025 season. Shildt told reporters at Petco Park on Saturday that he had a “great conversation” with Bogaerts, who is “very enthusiastic” about returning to shortstop.
Bogaerts played 85 games at second base last season, as the Padres attempted to optimize their defence with Ha-Seong Kim at shortstop. Kim left San Diego to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays this offseason.
Bogaerts had played shortstop in all eleven of his prior seasons before 2024. Bogaerts was a four-time MLB All-Star during his ten seasons with the Boston Red Sox, when he played solely shortstop.
Bogaerts, 32, has nine years remaining on his 11-year contract and could be moved back to second base at some point.
