In a stunning development, San Diego Padres General Manager A.J. Preller has announced a blockbuster trade acquiring Toronto Blue Jays star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The deal, valued at $105.5 million, sends infielder Jake Cronenworth, left-handed reliever Yuki Matsui, and top prospect shortstop Leodalis De Vries to Toronto.
Guerrero Jr., 25, has been a cornerstone for the Blue Jays since his MLB debut in 2019. Over his career, he has achieved a .288 batting average, 160 home runs, and 507 RBIs. His accolades include four All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger Awards, and the 2021 AL Hank Aaron Award. Notably, in 2021, he tied for the major league lead with 48 home runs and led in runs scored with 123.
The Padres’ acquisition of Guerrero Jr. addresses their need for a power hitter, especially after a quiet offseason. This move is expected to bolster their lineup and enhance their competitiveness in the NL West, where rivals like the Los Angeles Dodgers have made significant improvements.
In return, the Blue Jays receive Jake Cronenworth, a versatile infielder known for his consistent performance, and Yuki Matsui, a promising left-handed reliever. Leodalis De Vries, the Padres’ top prospect and ranked 25th overall in MLB, adds significant value to Toronto’s farm system.
Financially, the Padres will assume Guerrero Jr.’s $28.5 million average annual value contract, while offloading approximately $17 million associated with Cronenworth and Matsui. This results in a net increase of $11.5 million to their payroll, pushing them further into luxury tax territory. However, the Padres’ front office appears committed to investing in top-tier talent to pursue a championship.
This trade also reflects the Blue Jays’ strategic decision-making, as Guerrero Jr. was set to become a free agent after the 2025 season. By trading him now, Toronto secures valuable assets to remain competitive in the future.
A.J. Preller expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “Adding a player of Vladimir’s caliber significantly strengthens our lineup. We’re excited about what he brings to the team.”
As the 2025 season approaches, this trade positions the Padres as strong contenders, while the Blue Jays aim to build a sustainable future with their new talent.
