The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly facing internal disagreements regarding a potential move for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, with head coach Mike Tomlin at the center of the debate.
According to multiple sources, Tomlin is strongly in favor of acquiring Fields to bolster the Steelers’ quarterback situation, but key members of the front office, including general manager Omar Khan and ownership, are less convinced. The debate highlights Pittsburgh’s uncertainty at the position following an underwhelming 2023 season from Kenny Pickett.
Tomlin reportedly views Fields as a dynamic option who could add mobility and playmaking ability to an offense that struggled for consistency last season. The 24-year-old former first-round pick has shown flashes of brilliance in Chicago but has also struggled with decision-making and passing accuracy. However, Tomlin believes Fields’ upside outweighs the risks, especially given his dual-threat capabilities.
On the other hand, the Steelers’ front office is concerned about the financial and schematic fit. Fields is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, meaning the Steelers would need to decide on his fifth-year option or potentially work out a long-term extension in 2025. Additionally, some in the organization believe Pickett still deserves a chance to develop, while others prefer exploring veteran free agents like Ryan Tannehill or Russell Wilson.
With the Bears widely expected to draft a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, Fields is likely to be traded this offseason. Several teams, including the Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders, have been linked to the former Ohio State star. If Pittsburgh wants to make a move, it will need to resolve its internal differences before making an offer.
For now, the Steelers’ quarterback plans remain uncertain, but the reported disagreement between Tomlin and the front office suggests that Fields remains a polarizing figure in Pittsburgh’s offseason discussions.
