The New York Mets have signed two of the offseason’s top names, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso. They also signed Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to their rotation, although that aspect of the roster remains uncertain. Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, Montas, David Peterson, Holmes, and Tylor Megill are presently scheduled to make up the Mets rotation.
The bunch as a whole could succeed, but José Quintana’s absence is difficult to overlook, given he had a decent arm for the Mets the previous two seasons. Quintana remains unsigned, and Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicts he will sign with his previous team, the Chicago White Sox. “Despite going 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 170.1 innings over 31 starts with the Mets last season, José Quintana remains unsigned,” according to Reuter.
“The 36-year-old spent the first five-and-a-half seasons of his career with the White Sox, and he could return there to close out what has been a productive MLB career.” Quintana is expected to receive a two-year, $16 million contract in free agency. He made his MLB debut with the White Sox in 2012 and was named an All-Star for the team in 2016.
He has made 44 starts for the Mets over the last two seasons, posting a 3.70 ERA. If the Mets do not get another starter, they will have to rely on Holmes to fill in as a starting.
Holmes has not started since his rookie year, and if the Mets’ experiment with him fails, they might insert an arm like Quintana into the rotation. Quintana is entering his 14th season and has a lifetime 3.74 ERA.
