The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for their defensive identity, but after a disappointing 2024 season, it’s clear they need reinforcements. One blockbuster move could transform their unit instantly—trading for Cleveland Browns star pass rusher Myles Garrett.
Garrett, a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate, has been a nightmare for AFC North quarterbacks since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2017. The Steelers already have a dominant edge rusher in T.J. Watt, but pairing him with Garrett would create arguably the most feared pass-rushing duo in NFL history.
While the idea of Cleveland dealing its best defensive player to a division rival seems unlikely, the Browns’ financial situation could force tough decisions. With Deshaun Watson’s massive contract limiting cap flexibility, the team might explore trading Garrett to acquire valuable draft capital and shore up other roster weaknesses.
For Pittsburgh, acquiring Garrett would solve one of their biggest issues—finding consistent pass-rushing help beyond Watt. Alex Highsmith has been solid but not elite, and injuries have exposed the team’s lack of depth. Garrett’s presence would make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks and allow the Steelers’ secondary to thrive under less pressure.
Of course, pulling off such a trade would be costly. The Steelers would likely need to part with multiple high draft picks and possibly a key player. But with an aging Cameron Heyward and a defense looking to reclaim its dominance, adding a generational talent like Garrett could be worth the price.
Pittsburgh’s championship window remains open, but they need an aggressive move to take the next step. Trading for Myles Garrett might be bold, but it’s exactly what the Steelers defense needs to become elite again.
