The New York Mets signed Juan Soto to an unprecedented 15-year, $765 million contract in free agency. They also brought back Pete Alonso. Although their lineup additions received the most attention, they also signed Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. While Holmes, Montas, Sean Manaea, and Kodai Senga make a powerful rotation, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman suggested that the Mets deal for San Diego Padres starting Dylan Cease in order to win the World Series.
“This may be a long shot even for them, but Steve Cohen’s Mets should try hard for the Padres’ Dylan Cease,” Heyman suggested. “Cease is as reliable as he is talented,” said Heyman. “He led the league in games started three of the past four years, and he came one strikeout short of National League leader Chris Sale last year, with 224 strikeouts.” Cease will be a free agency after the season and may be a trade candidate. Last season, he finished fourth in the voting for the National League Cy Young Award. He ended as the American League’s runner-up in 2022. Cease has a 3.40 ERA over the last three seasons and might become the Mets’ ace.
Spotrac expects Cease to sign a five-year, $108 million contract in free agency. Heyman disclosed earlier this offseason that the Mets had discussed Cease with the Padres. Under Steve Cohen’s leadership, the Mets have never shied away from huge contracts. If the Padres do not intend to pay Cease after the season, they might obtain a good return on his contract.
