The Michigan Wolverines were ranked in the top four for the top running back in the 2026 class, five-star Savion Hiter. The other finalists for the Virginia native are Ohio State, Tennessee, and Georgia.
Tony Alford, the Wolverines’ running backs coach, has been a driving force in Hiter’s recruitment, offering him last March. Since then, Hiter has returned to Ann Arbour several times, most recently for the MSU game in October. Throughout the season, he also paid visits to his three other finalists.
Based on Hiter’s mother’s statements to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, the Wolverines appear to be at the top.
“I would say from his standpoint and our standpoint they’ve set the bar really high,” she told me. “From the start, the entire staff was participating. They have been pretty consistent. We have a wonderful relationship with both coach Tony Alford and head coach Sherrone Moore. This also applies to many other staff members.
“All of their staff communicates with us and ensures that Savion is their first priority for his class and overall. They’ve been the most constant in keeping us parents updated on everything. They always make sure we are involved. They’ve been fantastic at giving resources and information. Coach Alford is one of the few coaches at his level who has showed us not just what he intends to do for development, but also what will be involved in Savion’s development. There are other things he can do right now to help Savion improve his game. So, without a doubt, Michigan has set a very high standard from the start and has maintained it.”
Georgia appears to be in second place, with Hiter arriving on campus for an official visit the week before his trip to Michigan. The Bulldogs had him on campus only a few weeks ago and have had terrific success producing running backs in recent years, so they will most likely be Michigan’s strongest opposition.
Hiter, the nation’s No. 16 overall player, had 156 rush attempts for 1,698 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2024, in addition to 199 catching yards.
