Frankie Montas, one of the New York Mets’ new starting pitchers, will miss 6-8 weeks due to a high-grade lat strain, the organization revealed Monday.
Montas will travel from the Mets’ spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla., to New York for a platelet-rich plasma injection. Due to the shutdown, he may not be able to join the Mets until May or June.
“He’s going 6-8 (weeks) without throwing,” manager Carlos Mendoza explained. “Ramp up, he’s pretty much gotta go through a whole spring training program.”
Montas, who turns 32 on March 21, inked a two-year, $34 million contract with the Mets in December, with an opt-out clause next December.
Last season, Montas was 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA in 30 starts for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers. During his career with the two organizations, the Dominican Republic native pitched 150 2/3 innings.
Montas has played 160 games (129 starts) for the Chicago White Sox (2015), Oakland Athletics (2017-22), New York Yankees (2022-23), Reds, and Brewers, with a 44-46 record and 4.09 ERA.
