The Green Bay Packers are reportedly considering significant changes to their secondary, with discussions suggesting the potential release or trade of Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. Alexander, who signed a four-year, $84 million extension in 2022, has faced injury challenges, missing 34 of the last 68 games due to shoulder, knee, and groin issues. His availability concerns, combined with a substantial $25 million cap hit looming in 2025, have prompted the Packers to explore alternative options.
One potential replacement under consideration is New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed. Reed, who signed a three-year, $33 million contract with the Jets in 2022, has delivered consistent performances, making him an attractive candidate for the Packers’ secondary. Acquiring Reed would likely involve a contract in the range of $56 million over four years, aligning with current market trends for top-tier cornerbacks.
The financial implications of moving on from Alexander are notable. Releasing or trading him before June 1 could free up approximately $6.8 million in cap space for the 2025 season. However, finding a trade partner might prove challenging, as other teams are aware of the Packers’ intentions and may prefer to wait for his release to negotiate a more favorable deal.
In addition to Reed, the Packers are also evaluating other potential replacements. Asante Samuel Jr., formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers, is projected to command a four-year deal worth around $66.4 million. Byron Murphy, who has shown significant improvement during his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings, is another candidate under consideration.
As the offseason progresses, the Packers’ front office faces critical decisions regarding the composition of their secondary. Balancing financial constraints with the need for reliable, high-caliber defensive backs will be essential in determining the team’s approach to either retaining Alexander or pursuing alternative options like Reed.
