ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum has expressed serious concerns about Brent Venables’ tenure as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. Following a disappointing 6-7 season in 2024—the same record as his inaugural year in 2022—Venables’ position appears increasingly precarious. Finebaum emphasized that another subpar season could jeopardize Venables’ role, stating, “He needs a big season because he’s had two bad seasons out of three. I wouldn’t press my luck with another one.”
The Sooners’ performance has been inconsistent under Venables. After a promising 10-3 finish in 2023, the team regressed in their first SEC season, ending with a 6-7 record and a dismal 2-6 in conference play. This decline has raised questions about Venables’ ability to lead the team effectively in a more competitive conference.
Adding to the pressure, the Sooners have experienced significant roster changes. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel transferred to Oregon, leading them to a Big Ten Championship and a playoff berth. In response, Venables has brought in former Washington State quarterback John Mateer through the transfer portal. Finebaum suggests that Mateer’s performance could be pivotal for Venables’ future, noting, “I think the most important thing is the quarterback play.”
The upcoming 2025 season is shaping up to be a critical juncture for Venables. The Oklahoma fan base, accustomed to championship contention, is unlikely to tolerate another lackluster season. Finebaum cautioned, “That program will not be patient for long.”
