Alexander has been a critical member of Green Bay’s defence, but his failure to stay healthy has caused anxiety within the organization. His availability has been sporadic in recent seasons, giving him an unpredictable presence on the field. Due to these durability difficulties, sources indicate that the Packers are seriously considering trading or releasing their Pro Bowl cornerback.
If Green Bay decides to move on from Alexander, they must find a capable successor who can match his high level of play. Fortunately, the approaching free agency season gives the team an opportunity to fill this potential hole.
Asante Samuel, Jr. as a Potential Replacement
Asante Samuel Jr., a Los Angeles Chargers cornerback, is one fascinating candidate mentioned as a prospective replacement. According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, Samuel would be an outstanding free agent target for the Packers. Given his skill set and recent relationship with the Packers’ coaching staff, he may be an ideal match for the team’s defensive strategy.
“The Green Bay Packers would be wise to give Samuel a look, as they continue to search for a high-end complement to Jaire Alexander,” Knox says. “Packers passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley previously coached Samuel as Los Angeles’ defensive coordinator.”
Samuel’s recent track record strengthens his case as a viable candidate. Despite playing only four games in the 2024 season due to a shoulder injury, he made big contributions to the Los Angeles Chargers’ defence in 2023. That year, he played in all 17 games, recording 63 tackles, two interceptions, and 13 passes defensed. His dependability when healthy makes him an appealing candidate for a long-term role in Green Bay’s secondary.
Samuel’s injury history, however, is of paramount concern. In Week 6 of the 2024 season, he was placed on injured reserve due to a reoccurring shoulder ailment that was aggravated by contact in practice. When asked about his health, Samuel revealed that his shoulder injury is a “lifelong issue.”
How Samuel Fits With The Green Bay Packers
At barely 25 years old, Asante Samuel Jr. would add youth and dependability to the Green Bay Packers’ defence. His aggressive playing style complements defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s scheme, which prioritizes tight coverage and playmaking ability. If Green Bay choose to replace Alexander, Samuel has already proved his ability to match up with top wide receivers, giving him a perfect option to fill the position.
Even if the Packers decide to keep Alexander, which is improbable, acquiring Samuel may still be a wise move. He would add depth and serve as a top-tier number two cornerback, providing insurance if Alexander’s injury issues remain.
Ultimately, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers’ front office must make a critical choice on Alexander’s future. With free agency approaching, keeping an eye on Samuel as a possible target will be critical as Green Bay looks to strengthen its secondary.
