HUGE CHAOS: Big Ten’s CFP Expansion Puts James Franklin Under Fire, Penn State Faces a Title-or-Bust Reality

The College Football Playoff is expanding, and with it, the pressure is mounting on Penn State head coach James Franklin. As the Big Ten pushes for greater national relevance in the new 12-team format, expectations in Happy Valley are at an all-time high. The question now: Can Franklin finally deliver a championship?

For years, Penn State has been on the cusp of breaking through but has consistently fallen short in key moments. Despite several double-digit win seasons, the Nittany Lions have yet to secure a Big Ten title under Franklin since 2016. With an expanded playoff offering more opportunities, there are no more excuses. The time to win is now.

The Big Ten’s increasing dominance in the national conversation—especially with powerhouses like Michigan and Ohio State consistently competing at the highest level—only amplifies the urgency. The arrival of USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington in 2024 adds even more pressure, making the path to a conference championship and a playoff berth even tougher.

Franklin has assembled one of Penn State’s most talented rosters in years, with five-star quarterback Drew Allar expected to take another step forward in 2025. The Nittany Lions have also been active in the transfer portal, adding key playmakers on both sides of the ball. But talent alone won’t be enough—Franklin must prove he can win big games, something that has eluded him against top-tier competition.

Penn State fans have grown restless, watching Michigan, Ohio State, and even teams like Washington and TCU reach the playoff while the Nittany Lions remain on the outside looking in. With the expanded field, making the playoff won’t be enough—Penn State must contend for a national championship.

If Franklin can’t deliver in 2025, the calls for change will only grow louder. The Big Ten’s evolution is in full swing, and for Penn State, it’s now or never.

Will Franklin finally lead the Nittany Lions to glory, or will Penn State remain stuck in neutral? The 2025 season may be his defining moment.
