NFL NEWS: Packers GM Makes Brutal Public Announcement and Decision on Franchise’s Proposed Tush Push Ban

The Green Bay Packers proposed a ban on Monday on the “tush push,” a strategy popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles in which the squad pushes the quarterback in short-yardage situations. Other NFL teams have not been fans of this play because it has proven difficult to defend, thus the Packers opted to try to eliminate it.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst discussed the proposal during a press conference at the NFL scouting combine on Tuesday. He confessed he hasn’t spoken much with the organization about the plan, but he is aware that the Packers have historically battled with the “tush push.”

“We’re not very successful against it, I know that, but to be honest with you I haven’t put much thought into it,” Gutekunst claimed. “It’s been around for a while, and we’ve used it in various ways with our tight end, so I believe there will be a lot of talk about it. I’ll have to look into some of the data on injury rates and such. But we shall see.

“I’m aware of it, but we haven’t had many discussions about it,” Gutekunst explained. “I am confident we will attend the owners’ meetings in the coming weeks. I am aware that we did, but we have not had many discussions about it.”

It appears that the concept is still in its early stages, but they have some time to work out the details before the league meeting on March 30. For the ban to take effect, the Packers will need 24 clubs to vote in favor of it.
