OFFICIAL: Mets Officially Announced Trade With Cubs For MLB Star Outfielder After Unfortunate News on Monday

The New York Mets had possibly the most significant MLB offseason of any franchise. New York signed superstar outfielder Juan Soto to a historic 15-year, $765 million contract, while also re-signing slugging first baseman Pete Alonso. The Mets bolstered their pitching staff by signing Clay Holmes after his four-year stint with the New York Yankees, making him a full-time starter for the first time in his MLB career. While the Mets made some significant moves this offseason, they also made a minor move to sign 2018 first-round draft selection Nick Madrigal to compete for the backup shortstop spot behind Francisco Lindor.

Madrigal had a left shoulder injury on Sunday and was scheduled for an MRI on Monday, and the results are not good for the former Chicago White Sox prospect. Madrigal fractured his left shoulder, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza informed reporters on Monday. “Nick Madrigal’s MRI revealed a fracture in his left shoulder.” “He’ll get a CT scan for more information, but he’ll be out ‘for a long time,’ according to Carlos Mendoza,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo said on X.

 

Following this revelation, New York placed Madrigal on the 60-day injured list and announced a trade with the Chicago Cubs. “We have acquired OF Alexander Canario from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations,” the Mets said in a press release. “In a corresponding move, INF Nick Madrigal has been placed on the 60-Day IL.”

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers first reported that New York was acquiring Canario, and the Mets made the transaction public minutes later when they announced Madrigal would be placed on the 60-Day IL.
