The Toronto Blue Jays failed to extend superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s contract before the offseason deadline. Now, the Blue Jays standout will approach free agency as the market’s top talent.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Guerrero may fetch more than $600 million in free agency. This would be a significant increase over prior forecasts, which were all around the $427 million range forecasted by Spotrac.
Obviously, $600 million is a huge sum to forecast. To begin last offseason, it was merely speculated that Juan Soto would sign a deal for $500 million. This would progressively trend upward, until an all-out bidding frenzy pushed the final price to nearly $800 million.
With Soto’s $765 million signing, it’s crucial to recognize that the market has been entirely reset for these superstar free agents who are entering the market before their peak.
Guerrero’s market couldn’t be stronger, with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays all likely to pursue him. All of these teams were reportedly willing to offer Soto a deal worth more than $700 million.
A year later, any of these teams might pay Guerrero $600 million.
To be honest, I believe Guerrero will secure a transaction worth more than half a billion dollars, but it will not exceed $600 million.
